According to a statement on X on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate for 2027, has promised to immediately tackle the housing crisis facing millions of Nigerians by signing an executive order limiting rent demands to a maximum of three months.
“No landlord or landlady shall have the freedom to demand more than 3 months’ rent at a time. On my very 1st day in office, I will sign an Executive Order ending the exploitation of tenants across Nigeria,” Sowore stated emphatically. He tagged the message with his campaign hashtags #Sowore2027 and #TakeItBack, accompanied by a bold campaign graphic.
The promise targets a longstanding practice in many Nigerian cities where tenants are often required to pay one to two years’ rent upfront. Sowore framed the policy as a direct intervention against tenant exploitation. “This is about ending the exploitation of tenants across Nigeria,” he reiterated in his message.
Reactions to Sowore’s announcement have been sharply divided. Supporters hailed it as a visionary relief measure. “My president,” one enthusiast posted, while another declared, “A leader with vision.”
Many tenants shared personal stories of hardship, with one noting the daily difficulties in finding affordable housing and the heavy burden of upfront payments. Some argued that housing policy falls primarily under state jurisdiction rather than federal executive power.
Others warned of potential unintended consequences. “Sounds good on paper, but without affordable housing and stable income, landlords will simply increase rent prices or demand hidden charges,” one user cautioned.
