According to a report by This Day Live on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has linked the withdrawal of Siminalayi Fubara from the governorship race of the All Progressives Congress to an alleged understanding reached with political groups opposed to him in Rivers State.
According to Wike, the agreement was aimed at stopping moves to impeach the governor on the condition that he would not contest for another term in 2027.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja while carrying out an inspection of projects scheduled for inauguration as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the administration of Bola Tinubu.
During the inspection, the minister addressed journalists and spoke on the political situation in Rivers State, including the decision by Fubara to step away from the governorship contest.
The former Rivers State governor stated that the development did not come as a surprise to him, maintaining that the withdrawal was the outcome of political negotiations between the governor and factions that had been at loggerheads with him.
Wike also accused Fubara, whom he described as his political protégé, of lacking political principle and betraying those who supported his emergence in office.
He further criticised the Rivers governor for initially obtaining the nomination form despite the alleged agreement not to seek re-election.
Wike maintained that the action showed inconsistency and questioned the governor’s political commitment.
He insisted that the unfolding events in Rivers State were a reflection of decisions already taken behind the scenes among the political actors involved in the crisis.
During the inspection tour, the minister also assessed several infrastructure projects under the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
Among the projects inspected was the Renewed Hope City in Karsana, being executed by Lubriks.
Wike disclosed that the housing project had reached 98 per cent completion and would soon be ready for commissioning as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Another project visited by the minister was the Old Keffi Road in Dei Dei, where construction work, including asphalt laying and installation of street lights, was ongoing.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded on the road project and said it would also be inaugurated during the anniversary activities marking President Tinubu’s third year in office.
He stated, “Then we now went to Airport Road to Kuje, which is a very fantastic job. I’m sure anybody who goes there will admire it and that is what is called governance. Very proud of the contractors, that is the Arab contractors. We are very proud of what they have done…..See More
