A 30-year-old teacher and church choir master, Nathaniel Baiyegun, has confessed to planning the kidnapping of his former student, a 16-year-old girl preparing to rewrite her WAEC examination in Ogun State.
According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Baiyegun, who taught Physics and Further Mathematics at a private school in Ogijo, said he reconnected with the teenager in April after not seeing her for about a year. According to him, the girl complained about failing Mathematics and English in her previous WAEC exams, and he introduced her to a coaching class.
He claimed that after meeting one of his friends, the girl suggested a fake kidnapping because she had a wealthy uncle who could pay a ransom. Baiyegun admitted that he initiated the plan and hid her in an uncompleted building behind the school.
The suspect said he used the girl’s phone to demand N3 million from her family. He added that after she complained of being unable to sleep, he gave her several sleeping tablets.
According to him, he later returned and discovered that the girl was struggling to breathe. He then carried her on a motorcycle and dumped her body in a river in the Ogijo area.
Baiyegun also confessed that after the girl had died, he still collected N500,000 ransom from her father and spent most of the money on online sports betting.
