Chieftain of the coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo, who formerly served as spokesperson for Peter Obi, has stated that he believed they won the 2023 presidential election, but Obi was unable to secure the victory.
Speaking during an interview, Okonkwo explained that one of the major reasons he supported Peter Obi was because he desired to see someone from the South-East become President of Nigeria. According to him, he strongly believed that Obi and his supporters won the election through the votes of Nigerians.
In his words:
“Why did I leave? I told you that in 2023, before I even came into the campaign, I had never sat down with Peter Obi to discuss. I read up about him and also read about Atiku Abubakar. I wanted somebody from the South-East to be president and, of course, I campaigned, and I believe we won that election.”
Speaking further, Okonkwo said his disappointment started after the election, when, according to him, Peter Obi could not effectively secure or defend what he described as their victory at the polls.
He stated that the development made him begin to question Obi’s leadership ability and political strength.
