During an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Adams Oshiomhole spoke about the lawmaking process in the National Assembly and the importance of proper legislative scrutiny before bills are passed.
Oshiomhole stressed the need for lawmakers to carefully examine every clause in proposed legislation to avoid contradictions with existing laws and the Nigerian Constitution. His comments come amid ongoing discussions within the National Assembly over legislative reforms and the procedures guiding the passage of bills in the Senate.
According to him, “First let me give you a background, and I ask you to confirm it with every senator in the 10th assembly. My view is, we must not rush in making laws. Every clause, every word must benefit from scrutiny.”
He further stated, “And so rushing ‘pam pam pam’ at the end of the day, we have made couple of mistakes couple of times making laws that are in conflict with existing law that the third assembly has made or even more seriously making laws that are in conflict with the Nigerian constitution. And the only way to avoid those avoidable errors is to allow for proper debate.”
The former Edo State governor maintained that careful debate and legislative review are essential to ensuring that laws passed by the National Assembly are consistent with constitutional provisions and existing statutes.
