Just days after Iranian officials warned that any French or British naval deployment in or near the strait would be met with a decisive and immediate response from the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the French government reaffirmed that their planned maritime operation in the Strait of Hormuz carries no offensive posture, pushing back against escalating threats from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran under the leadership of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei over potential Western naval activity in the strategic waterway.
According to a report made by Anadolu English on Monday, 11 May 2026, the Spokesperson of the Government of France, Maud Bregeon emphasized that the French Government under the leadership of President Emmanuel Macron has consistently described the initiative as defensive in nature, stating that France, in coordination with the United Kingdom and other allied partners, is focused on restoring safe navigation through the strait.
She also said “We have taken an initiative to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, again in an exclusively defensive posture, in coordination with the different forces in the region when security conditions allow,”
The French Spokesperson, Bregeon went further to rejected any suggestion that France’s military movements, including the deployment of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle toward the southern Red Sea, signal offensive intentions.
She also reiterated that President Emmanuel Macron of France had repeatedly underlined France’s position, insisting the mission is fully aligned with international law and necessary for the stability of the global economy.
Maud Bregeo also said “The objective is a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. It is in line with international law and necessary for the global economy,” underscoring a broader European effort to balance maritime security with de-escalation, even as Iran continues to view any Western military activity near their coastline as a direct provocation…….See More
