According to a post made by Elon Musk on X the billionaire entrepreneur pointed to the widening demographic gap between Nigeria and the European Union, noting that Nigeria recorded about four million more births than the entire EU last year.
Musk’s observation reflects recent demographic estimates showing that Nigeria recorded roughly 7.5 million births during the 2024–2025 period, while the European Union registered about 3.5 million births, creating a difference of approximately four million.
The figures also illustrate the contrasting fertility trends between the two regions.
Nigeria continues to maintain a total fertility rate of around 4.5 children per woman, one of the highest globally, whereas the EU’s fertility rate has fallen to approximately 1.34 children per woman, significantly below the 2.1 replacement level required to sustain a stable population without immigration.
“Nigeria alone had 4 million more births than the entire EU last year!” Musk stated.
The demographic contrast has drawn increasing attention from economists and policymakers because of its potential long-term effects.
