How My Dad’s Belt Damaged My Eye When I Was Six And Treatment Delay Left Me Blind -FUOYE Student

Esther Oriyomi, a 100 level student at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, is currently sharing the harrowing details of a childhood injury that resulted in permanent blindness. The young woman, now twenty years old, faces a lifetime of physical pain and emotional trauma following a domestic accident that occurred when she was just six years old during a festive Christmas season.

According to an interview posted by Punch Newspaper on Sunday May 10, 2026, while recounting the devastating medical journey she endured, she stated, “the doctors kept asking why I didn’t come earlier because, according to them, the condition had already become very serious.” This delay, rooted in a series of initial misdiagnoses and parental hesitation, ultimately cost Esther her sight.

The tragedy began when her father accidentally struck her left eye with the iron buckle of a belt while attempting to discipline children for being too noisy. Although the eye bled immediately, the family did not initially visit a specialist, opting instead for general medications and eye drops. This decision allowed a treatable injury to transition into a complex, irreversible medical emergency.

As she grew older, her vision blurred and her eye became misaligned, leading to years of social stigma and academic struggle in boarding school. Specialists eventually revealed that the damage had progressed to retinal detachment, a condition that could now potentially threaten her remaining good eye. The window for surgical intervention had closed long before she reached her teenage years, they said.

Despite the persistent, needle like pain that keeps her awake at night, Esther has made the difficult choice to forgive her father for the incident. She is now focused on her academic goals in English and Literary Studies, hoping to become a professional lecturer. Her story remains a sobering reminder for all parents to prioritize immediate specialist care for childhood injuries……See More
