Reverend Christie Bature has shared a tragic personal story about childhood exposure to smoking, revealing how a seemingly harmless experiment with her younger sister ended in a lifelong addiction that later claimed her sibling’s life.
Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, the cleric discussed addiction and the dangers of early exposure to harmful substances. She explained that both she and her younger sister were influenced by what they saw on television, where smoking appeared glamorous and fashionable.
Recounting the experience, she said they decided to try smoking at a very young age after finding a discarded cigarette. According to her, the moment became a turning point that produced two very different outcomes for both siblings.
“My younger sister and I picked up a half smoked cigarette at age 7 and 9, it eventually killed her,” she said, while explaining that the experiment took place under a staircase where they hid to avoid being caught.
Bature narrated that she took the first drag but immediately began coughing uncontrollably and struggled to breathe. The unpleasant experience discouraged her from ever smoking again. However, she noted that her younger sister reacted differently, finishing the cigarette without any discomfort.
She explained that her sister continued smoking afterward and developed what she described as an addictive personality for tobacco. According to her, the habit persisted for decades and eventually led to her sister’s death at the age of 44.
The cleric used the story to warn parents and young people about the unpredictability of addiction, stressing that individuals react differently to substances.
