According to a report by Channels Television, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa has recalled an incident from his time as Theatre Commander in the Northeast, where troops under his command secured a community but faced opposition from a resident.
Musa explained that after the soldiers successfully secured the village, a woman confronted them and questioned their actions. According to him, the woman firmly believed that the troops were acting wrongly, despite their efforts to protect the community.
The Defence Minister said the incident demonstrated how deeply perceptions can influence the way people understand military operations, particularly in areas affected by conflict. He noted that some residents may accept narratives presented to them to the extent that they view those outside their group as being entirely wrong.
Musa recalled the woman asking the soldiers whether they understood what they were doing and insisting that their actions were wrong.
“There was an instance when I was Theatre Commander in the Northeast, my troops went to a village and were able to secure the place, and a lady came and challenged them,” Musa said.
He added that the woman had been convinced by a particular narrative and genuinely believed that her position was right, highlighting the challenges security forces can face when operating in communities affected by conflict and differing perceptions.
