In an interview with Symfoni TV, Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stated that Nasir El-Rufai did not support Bola Tinubu when he first declared his intention to run for president in 2023.
Lawal said El-Rufai only began supporting Tinubu midway through the presidential campaign. He stated that El-Rufai and Tinubu were never close friends before 2023
Lawal said there was a time El-Rufai travelled to Lagos and tried to undermine Tinubu during a conference. He stated that El-Rufai boasted at the conference that he had come to Lagos to teach Lagosians how to deal with the “godfather,” referring to Tinubu
In Lawal’s words: “Everybody knew that he and Bola Tinubu were never friends. It got to a stage he even went to Lagos and tried to undermine Bola Tinubu in some conference, where he was boasting about coming to Lagos to teach Lagosians how to deal with the godfather”
