Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has revealed that his father introduced him to smoking by giving him his first cigarette, adding that he is now working to overcome the habit in support of healthier living.
Speaking during an interview on Nevon HQ on Saturday, 25 July, 2026, Charly Boy reflected on his early experience with smoking and explained how his father’s approach influenced him at a young age. He also spoke about his determination to quit, saying he could not continue advocating for good health while still smoking.
According to the outspoken entertainer, his father noticed that he had already started experimenting with smoking in secret and decided to confront the issue directly instead of pretending not to know.
My father gave me my first cigarette. He said I know you go to backyard to roll paper, come and take one cigarette. But I thank God I’m also beating that habit because I can’t be advocating for good health and at my age I’m still smoking,” Charly Boy said.
He noted that breaking the long-standing habit has become important to him, especially as he continues to encourage people to embrace healthier lifestyles. Charly Boy suggested that his personal journey serves as a reminder that it is never too late to make positive changes, regardless of age.
