Former presidential candidate and economist Kingsley Moghalu has shared an experience he had with an airport security official in Morocco, saying the encounter reflected the admiration many Moroccans have for Nigerian footballers.
Moghalu disclosed the incident in a post published on his official X account on Thursday, July 16, 2026. According to him, the interaction took place at Rabat Airport while he was preparing to board a flight after passing through airport security.
He explained that after presenting his Nigerian passport, the security official looked at it, smiled warmly, and immediately referenced former Nigerian international Tijani Babangida, a player who enjoyed a successful football career and remains well known in several African countries.
Sharing the experience, Moghalu wrote, “As I was passing through airport security in Rabat, Morocco earlier today about to board a flight, the security official looked at my Nigerian passport and smiled. ‘Say hi to Tijani Babangida,’ he said warmly. Moroccans love Nigerian soccer stars.”
The former presidential candidate said the encounter reminded him of the strong admiration many Moroccans have for Nigerian footballers, noting that it was not the first time he had witnessed such affection for Nigerian sports personalities while visiting the North African country.
According to Moghalu, Nigerian football has helped build a positive image of the country abroad, with several players earning respect through their performances for club and country over the years. He suggested that such achievements continue to shape how many foreigners perceive Nigerians.
He also recalled another memorable experience at a Moroccan airport, where he said a security official appeared so interested in his Nigerian passport that an American passport presented around the same time received little attention in comparison.
