Odinkalu Reacts To Story Of Enugu Lawmaker Jailed For Bailable Offence After Swearing-In Since 2023

Human rights lawyer and public affairs commentator, Chidi Odinkalu, has reacted to claims surrounding the continued detention of an Enugu lawmaker, Barrister Bright Ngene, who was allegedly jailed after being sworn in as a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly in 2023.

The controversy resurfaced after an X user identified as Nedu shared allegations that Ngene, elected under the Labour Party to represent Enugu South Urban Constituency, was imprisoned immediately after his inauguration over what was described as a bailable offence.

According to the post, the lawmaker’s ordeal was allegedly connected to discrimination over his community background, with claims that some individuals opposed his electoral victory because he was labelled “Osu.”

The social media user further alleged that judges handling the matter had repeatedly distanced themselves from delivering judgment and accused powerful political figures in the state of influencing the case.

Reacting to the development, Odinkalu suggested that the matter surrounding Bright Ngene was highly sensitive and controversial.

“The Bright Ngene case is obviously beyond anomalous. I’d prefer not to discuss it here in the hope that it may aid a constructive outcome for him,” Odinkalu wrote.

He added, “If I said what I know about the leadership of the judiciary in Enugu State, I’d cause a scandal or worse.”

The post has since generated widespread reactions online, with several users calling for an independent review of the case and demanding greater transparency from the state judiciary.

The allegations also sparked renewed debates about the treatment of detainees awaiting trial, the administration of justice, and claims of political interference in judicial processes.

As of the time of filing this report, the Enugu State Government and the state judiciary had not officially responded to the allegations circulating online.

There was also no immediate official statement from security agencies or court authorities regarding the current status of the case involving Bright Ngene…….See More
