Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social activist Charly Boy has shared an amusing story about how he persuaded former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to part with a special outfit that had caught his attention.
Speaking during an interview with TVC, Charly Boy, whose real name is Charles Oputa, recalled that he first became interested in the outfit after watching a video of Obasanjo attending a cultural festival. According to him, he was impressed by the former president’s appearance and immediately developed a strong desire to own the clothing.
Oputa explained that when he later had the opportunity to visit Obasanjo, he did not hesitate to make his request. He approached the former president and asked him to give him the outfit he had worn to the event. Known for his playful personality and determination, Charly Boy said he was convinced he would eventually get what he wanted.
However, Obasanjo initially declined the request and made it clear that he was not willing to part with the attire. Despite the refusal, Oputa said he was not prepared to give up. In a light-hearted attempt to change the former president’s mind, he pretended to cry and acted as though he was deeply disappointed by the rejection.
According to the entertainer, the dramatic display eventually had the desired effect. Obasanjo reportedly found the situation amusing and decided it was easier to grant the request than continue dealing with Charly Boy’s persistence.
Recounting the moment, Oputa said: “I just saw a video of him at a festival, and when I later went to visit him, I told him, ‘Baba, I need that thing you wore that day.’ When I want something, I must get it, and I got it that day. When he said, ‘No, I am not going to give it to you,’ I pretended to cry. Baba then said, ‘Please, I don’t want his trouble, go and bring it and give it to him.’”
The story offered a glimpse into the friendly relationship between the two prominent Nigerians and highlighted Charly Boy’s trademark sense of humor.
