Precious Godwin, a young woman from Benin, Edo State, has recounted the harsh conditions she endured while travelling through the Sahara Desert after fleeing her alleged trafficker in Mali, revealing that migrants were forced to drink urine to survive because they had no access to water.
Speaking during an interview on the Abdullahi Tahir Balarae Podcast, on Saturday, 11 July, 2026, Godwin explained that after escaping from the woman she identified as Madam Gold in Bamako, Mali, she decided to continue her journey towards Libya in the hope of eventually reaching Europe.
Narrating the experience, she said, “We didn’t have water. The boys with us were begging us to urinate and give them to drink. If we want to urinate, they will cut jerican and beg us to urinate inside so they can drink. I drank my own urine in the desert.”
Godwin explained that the lack of water left the group in desperate condition, with survival becoming their only concern.
