According to a report by Punch News, on Sunday, June 7, 2026, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, revealed that several governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have contacted him following his recent resignation from the African Democratic Congress.
Speaking during an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Lawal explained that his departure from the ADC came shortly after he raised concerns over the party’s presidential primary, which he alleged was manipulated in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The former SGF disclosed that since announcing his exit from the party, he has received numerous calls from political figures across the country.
According to him, some political parties even indicated their willingness to hand over their platforms to him if he chose to join them.
He added that many influential individuals had reached out to commend his decision, noting that the level of support he had received might surprise many observers.
Lawal further stated that about five or six serving APC governors, many of whom he described as personal friends, had contacted him to ask whether he was planning to return to the ruling party.
He said a number of ministers also expressed interest in knowing if he would reconsider his relationship with the APC.
Lawal made it clear that he is not contemplating a return to the party at this time.
He maintained that the issues that prompted his departure from the APC have not been addressed and that returning under the same circumstances would serve no meaningful purpose.
According to him, there is little value in going back to a political environment where the challenges that forced him out remain unresolved.
The former government official stressed that he is currently taking a break from active political engagement and has chosen to focus on life outside the political arena.
He said he has returned to his village to concentrate on farming and questioned the assumption that politics must remain a permanent career path for him.
Lawal emphasized that politics was not a family tradition that he inherited and that he entered public life through his own choices.
He Said, “I have no relationship with any of these crooked politicians. We all met in Abuja and now I have left Abuja for them.”
Lawal also dismissed criticisms directed at him by some supporters of Atiku and members of the ADC who accused him of abandoning the party.
He insisted that the reactions surrounding his resignation do not concern him and that he remains unfazed by the comments being made against him.
Responding to allegations that his resignation amounted to a betrayal of Atiku, Lawal strongly rejected the claim.
He argued that he had never belonged to the former vice president’s political camp and therefore could not be accused of betraying someone with whom he never shared political allegiance.
He further downplayed remarks made by Atiku’s supporters, describing them as predictable reactions.
Lawal suggested that once he returns to Abuja and resumes active participation in political discussions, his critics would once again become defensive.
While stating that he is currently enjoying a peaceful period away from political battles, he warned that he would not hesitate to respond forcefully if anyone sought to challenge him politically.
Lawal maintained that he is in no rush to join another political platform, insisting that his immediate focus remains on his personal affairs and farming activities rather than pursuing a new political destination.
