In a recent interview with The Sun on Sunday, April 26, 2026, former President of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), Dr. Jonathan Asake, has stated that the insecurity in Nigeria is connected to the implementation of Sharia law in some northern states.
Asake stated that the current insecurity being experienced in parts of Nigeria, especially in the North, is linked in his view to the way Sharia law has been implemented in some states and stated that Sharia has already been adopted in about 12 of the 19 northern states.
He explained that, in his opinion, there are groups that strongly support the implementation of Sharia law in these states, he said these groups see the system as an important part of their political and religious structure and identity.
According to him, such groups are also believed to support efforts that preserve or strengthen the Sharia system, he claimed that they often oppose policies, decisions, or actions that they feel may affect or change its implementation.
Asake further stated that, in his view, there is a strong desire among these groups to protect what they consider an established system, he said this has influenced how they respond to national discussions and governance issues.
He added that, in his interpretation, any move seen as capable of weakening or changing the Sharia structure is often resisted, he said this resistance shapes political reactions in some parts of the country.
The former SOKAPU president also said that insecurity should not be viewed in isolation, he argued that it should be understood within broader social, religious, and political arrangements in the North.
”The insecurity that the nation is suffering from comes from this implementation of Sharia that I told you about. So, these people are the champions of the implementation of Sharia, which is already in 12 of the 19 northern states,” he said…….See More
