Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has responded sharply after opposition political parties reportedly agreed to present a united presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
The agreement was reached at a national political summit held in Ibadan, where several opposition leaders gathered to review Nigeria’s democratic system and explore ways to strengthen their political influence ahead of the next election cycle. A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to unite behind a single candidate in order to prevent vote splitting, which they believe has weakened opposition chances in past elections.
Following the development, Fani-Kayode took to social media platform X to express his concerns. He particularly reacted to references made at the summit to “Operation Wetie,” a phrase associated with the violent political unrest in Nigeria during the 1960s.
He warned that invoking such historical references was dangerous and capable of inflaming political tension. According to him, the period linked to “Operation Wetie” was marked by widespread violence, instability, military intervention, and eventually civil conflict, and should not be casually referenced in modern political discourse.
Fani-Kayode questioned whether the opposition was attempting to revive or repeat such a turbulent chapter in the country’s history. He urged political actors to be more responsible with their language and actions, stressing that Nigeria’s fragile democracy should not be put at risk.
Despite his criticism, he maintained that the opposition’s declarations would not intimidate anyone in the ruling camp. He added that the outcome of the 2027 elections would ultimately be determined by the Nigerian electorate, not political rhetoric or alliances.
The Ibadan summit brought together influential opposition figures who also expressed concerns about what they described as increasing political imbalance in the country. They argued that a weakened opposition could pose a threat to democratic accountability…..See More
