Tinubu: If Obi Or Atiku Had Won That Election, Would They Not Have Won Wiith The Same Margin? -Ikechukwu

A political analyst and governance expert, Okey Ikechukwu, has argued that the outcome of Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election would likely have produced a similar victory margin regardless of the eventual winner, pushing back against narratives questioning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Saturday, April 24, 2026, Ikechukwu said critics who focus on the percentage of votes secured by the president overlook the structural realities of Nigeria’s multi-party electoral system.

According to him, if opposition figures such as Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar had emerged victorious, they would have done so with roughly the same margin, given the fragmentation of voter support across multiple strong candidates.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s electoral framework is based on securing the highest number of valid votes cast, alongside meeting constitutional spread requirements, rather than achieving an overwhelming majority. As such, Ikechukwu argued that expecting any candidate to secure an outsized percentage in a competitive race is unrealistic.

The analyst maintained that debates centered on vote margins risk oversimplifying the electoral process and diverting attention from more substantive questions about governance and institutional performance.

In his words: “If Peter Obi had won that election, or if Atiku had won that election, would they not have won with roughly the same margin? You do not become president or governor because you got 90% of the votes. Those who are presumably informed should go and look at the rules: the highest number of votes cast, after considering geographical spread. The rules are there, and they are clear.”……See More
