OBJ: Chief MKO Abiola Told Me About Him, They Were Both Very Poor And Were In The Same School -Nyiam

Retired Colonel Anthony Otu-Nyiam has highlighted how Nigeria’s past investments in education and military training created opportunities for individuals from humble beginnings to rise to national prominence.

Speaking during an interview on The Legacy Series, Otu-Nyiam reflected on his experience as a young officer, noting that he and many of his peers benefited from scholarships both within Nigeria and abroad. According to him, the country’s commitment to human capital development played a crucial role in shaping future leaders across different sectors.

Expanding on this, Otu-Nyiam cited the example of former Nigerian Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo and late business magnate MKO Abiola, both of whom rose from modest backgrounds. He said, “If you look at him, he was from a very poor background. In his own case, Chief MKO Abiola told me about him. They were both very poor and they were in the same school but the country gave them so much.”

The retired colonel explained that such examples demonstrate how Nigeria once provided equal opportunities for advancement, regardless of socio-economic status. He stressed that access to education, mentorship, and structured career pathways especially within the military, allowed many young Nigerians to develop their potential and contribute meaningfully to national development.
