In a recent interview shared by the official YouTube channel of News Central on May 21, 2026, Public Affairs Analyst Dotun Ojun reiterated the foundational principle of democratic governance, stressing the need to prioritize citizens above political actors.
Highlighting the essence of democracy, Ojun stated, “Democracy is about the people, not about the governor, not about the godfather, but about the people.” He explained that governance should be centered on delivering meaningful impact to citizens rather than serving the interests of political elites or power brokers.
According to Ojun, the increasing focus on political rivalries and control of structures often distracts leaders from their primary responsibility of improving the lives of the people. He noted that when governance becomes dominated by personal or group interests, the true purpose of democracy is compromised.
He further emphasized that citizens must remain at the heart of every policy, agreement, and decision-making process. Failure to do so, he warned, leads to poor service delivery, public frustration, and declining trust in democratic institutions.
