Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Atiku Abubakar said former President Olusegun Obasanjo set up a panel to probe him while he was in office.
Atiku explained that the panel was constituted under the leadership of former Attorney General Bayo Ojo, with other notable members involved in the process. He noted that the move was carried out under the directive of the presidency, prompting officials to visit him in connection with the investigation.
According to him, “He [Olusegun Obasanjo] set up a panel under the former Attorney General, Bayo Ojo. Nuhu Ribadu was a member, and El-Rufai was also a member. They came to my office and said, ‘We have instructions under Mr. President to probe you.’ I said, ‘But do you know I have constitutional immunity?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Okay, I have decided to waive the immunity. Probe me.’ And they probed me. What did they find? Nothing.”
He stated that despite having constitutional immunity at the time, he chose to waive it in order to allow the investigation to proceed without restriction. Atiku noted that his decision was guided by a desire to ensure transparency and provide an opportunity for the process to be conducted openly.
The former Vice President further explained that the outcome of the probe did not establish any wrongdoing against him, emphasizing that the process was concluded without adverse findings.
