Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said he deserves the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) because he is younger than other aspirants in the party.
According to a report by Daily Trust on Monday, May 18, 2026, speaking during a DCL Hausa programme, Amaechi said he is currently 60 years old and will turn 61 on May 27. According to him, most of the other politicians interested in the ADC presidential ticket are above 70 years old and should support his ambition.
He also stated that if he wins the party’s ticket, he would work to prevent electoral malpractice and ensure that elections are free and fair.
Amaechi used the interview to criticise the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the government of worsening economic hardship despite carrying out reforms. He questioned the removal of fuel subsidy and claimed that some public funds were not being used for projects that benefit Nigerians.
The former Minister of Transportation also defended himself against claims that he once said he did not enter politics to help Nigeria. He explained that he was misunderstood and said his views changed after he entered leadership positions.
Speaking about politics in Rivers State, Amaechi avoided discussing those he described as his subordinates and said Nigerians should wait for future elections to judge his political strength.
In his words, “I am 60 years old and will clock 61 by May 27. I am the youngest among them. All of them are above 70; they should support me. I would concede defeat if I fail to secure the ticket, provided the process is free and fair.”……..See More
