Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised the heavy presence of security operatives at a court session, saying it created tension and made it difficult for justice to be served.
In a video shared by SYMFONI TV, speaking after the court proceedings, Sowore accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of taking over the court premises and intimidating lawyers and supporters. He argued that courts should remain free and safe spaces where people can seek justice without fear.
Sowore also called on the Nigerian Bar Association to speak out against what he described as harassment and interference around courtrooms. According to him, lawyers should not stay silent when security agencies disrupt legal proceedings.
He compared the situation in Nigeria to Pakistan, where Supreme Court judges once protested against government actions they believed threatened the independence of the judiciary.
The activist further recalled an incident involving former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. Sowore said that after El-Rufai was granted bail, security operatives allegedly tried to stop him and others from greeting the politician as he left the court premises.
He maintained that intimidation, harassment, and clashes around courtrooms must stop in order to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system.
In his words, “When El-Rufai was leaving court after he was granted bail, they still tried to prevent us from even saying hello to him, how is prison? We had a whole altercation around that.”……See More
