Chuck Nduka-Eze, the Isama Ajie of Asaba, has stated that the Asaba Massacre was carried out by the Nigerian Army’s 2nd Infantry Division led by Murtala Muhammed and his deputy Col. Ibrahim Taiwo during the Nigerian Civil War
In an interview with Arise TV on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Eze said General Murtala and Col Taiwo died on the same day in different parts of Nigeria during the 1976 Dimka coup
Eze said General Murtala Mohammed, who was the Head of State, was killed in Lagos during the coup. He said Col Taiwo, who was then governor of Kwara State, was also killed in Ilorin around the same time
In Eze’s words: “What is quite symbolic about that Dimka coup was that the Head of State Murtala was in Lagos and the sad event took place in Lagos. Lt Col Taiwo was in Kwara in Ilorin as the governor of Kwara State and on the same day, practically the same time, these two gallant Nigerian soldiers who masterminded the Asaba Massacre were both killed in two different locations, and not by anybody associated with Asaba”……See More
