Otunba Segun Sowunmi, politician and convener of the Alternative Movement, has called on Nigerians to move beyond ethnic, religious and regional considerations when choosing leaders, urging voters to prioritise competence, performance and ideas.
During an interview with LEADERSHIP on Monday, May 18, 2026, Sowunmi said every region and tribe in the country has capable individuals who can provide quality leadership if given the opportunity.
He cautioned against what he described as the continued practice of promoting ineffective leaders based solely on identity politics, stressing that merit should remain the key factor in leadership selection.
According to him, Nigeria’s political culture can only improve when citizens deliberately support the most qualified candidates regardless of ethnic or religious background.
He said, “I don’t believe that there’s any region, any tribe, or any religion in this country that doesn’t have competent men. And that we shouldn’t crowd them out and always bring the worst from an ethnic group to come and lead, even if we want to do a rotation.”……..See More
