In a recent interview on TVC News, Adewale Adeoye, Executive Director of the Journalists for Democratic Rights (JODER), spoke on the evolving dynamics within Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, focusing on the relationship between major political figures and their independent strategies.
During the interview, Adeoye stated, “Atiku Abubakar thinks he can emerge as President without Peter Obi.” He made the remark while analysing what he described as the growing confidence and individualistic approach among leading opposition contenders.
Adeoye explained that Atiku Abubakar remains a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, with a sustained ambition to contest for the presidency again. However, he noted that recent political developments suggest a shift toward pursuing electoral success without relying on former alliances, including that with Peter Obi.
He argued that the collaboration seen in the 2023 general elections was largely tactical and driven by a shared interest in challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), rather than a long-term political partnership.
According to Adeoye, the current political environment shows that key opposition actors are now recalibrating their strategies independently, with each believing in their own electoral strength and regional support base.
He further stated that the relationship between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi has moved beyond the stage of cooperative opposition politics, as both figures now appear focused on separate political trajectories ahead of 2027.
Adeoye added that this development reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics, where alliances often dissolve once immediate electoral objectives are no longer shared, leading to renewed competition among former partners.
He concluded by noting that the 2027 elections will test the strength of individual political structures and determine whether opposition figures can still find common ground or continue on separate paths toward the presidency…..See More
