The exceptional achievements of Nigerian-American robotics engineer, Dr. Osatohanmwen “Osato” Osemwengie, have once again taken center stage globally, drawing praise for his extensive contributions to autonomous technology, defense engineering, and space exploration.
According to a profile spotlight published on the official Facebook page of the U.S. Mission Nigeria, the Edo State-born scientist continues to serve as an inspiration for African innovators through his continuous advancements in robotics and aerospace research in the United States.
Affectionately referred to as the “U.S. Drone Builder,” Dr. Osemwengie emigrated from Nigeria to the United States in the early 1980s. Prior to his departure, he worked as an academic administrator at the College of Education in Benin City, where he was once named Educator of the Year.
Upon moving to the U.S., he redirected his expertise into deep tech, software development, and robotics engineering.
Over a decades-long career, he became a highly recognized figure in military tech, collaborating with his brother Ken a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel at his Texas-based engineering corporation, Ubiquity Interface Inc.
His research and hardware designs have been utilized to develop advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) tasked with military surveillance and tactical operations for the United States Army.
Dr. Osemwengie’s technological footprint extends beyond terrestrial defense into deep space. The renowned engineer has lent his expertise to several high-profile National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) initiatives.
His portfolio includes early prototype and software engineering contributions for the Mars Curiosity Rover mission, alongside current research and developmental software aimed at advancing next-generation planetary rovers and space exploration drones.
Reflecting on his technical approach to these complex missions, Dr. Osemwengie previously shared his guiding research philosophy:

Academically, Dr. Osemwengie ranks among the most highly educated members of the Nigerian diaspora. Believing that a multidisciplinary approach is vital to breaking new engineering barriers, his academic credentials include an astonishing seven master’s degrees and multiple doctorate (PhD) degrees.
His extensive studies span fields like software engineering, curriculum and instruction, information systems, and robotics research across prominent American institutions, including the University of Cincinnati, Regis University, and the Keller Graduate School of Management.
Driven by a desire to democratize high-level tech education, he founded the Open Robotics University.
The institution operates as a tuition-free, degree-granting engineering facility designed to mentor and empower young global talents seeking to build careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
