As Israeli forces, and Hezbollah continue their daily exchanges of fire, with no end in sight to the low-intensity conflict that has simmered for months, a senior Israeli security source has acknowledged that even a full military occupation of Southern Lebanon would fail to destroy the weapons arsenal of the Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary group which is popularly known as Hezbollah, arguing that only a political breakthrough can change the reality on the ground amid ongoing cross-border hostilities.
According to a report made by Anadolu English on Sunday, 17 May, 2026, a senior Israeli security source in a remarkably candid assessment from within the Israeli security establishment, said “Even if we occupy all of southern Lebanon, as some suggest, these measures will not be able to destroy Hezbollah’s arsenal.”
He also added that Israel’s military establishment believes Hezbollah can be further weakened through targeted assassinations, infrastructure strikes, and additional operational measures, conceding that there is no radical solution on the horizon that will eliminate the threat, further underscoring a growing recognition in Tel Aviv that Lebanon’s militant group, which possesses an extensive rocket and drone arsenal, cannot be defeated by force alone.
The senior Israeli security official went further to reveal that the Israeli army is currently employing countermeasures costing approximately $171,500 per incident to mitigate Hezbollah-launched drone strikes, adding that even these expensive defenses are not a solution, pointing to the limits of a purely military approach.
He also said “Military action alone is insufficient; therefore, a political breakthrough is needed, alongside maintaining long-term military deterrence, in an attempt to change the reality on the ground.”……See More
