According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said it was “natural” that no agreement was reached with the United States during a single round of talks held in Islamabad, citing deep mistrust and unresolved disputes following recent regional hostilities.
Speaking on Sunday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei addressed the indirect negotiations between Iranian and U.S. delegations in Pakistan’s capital. He said the discussions took place in an atmosphere shaped by suspicion and lingering tensions after what he described as a 40-day conflict involving the United States and Israel.
“These talks were held in an atmosphere dominated not only by distrust but also by doubt and suspicion, following a 40-day war initiated for the second time within nine months by the US and Israel,” Baqaei said. “Therefore, it is natural that no agreement was reached in a single meeting. In any case, no one had such an expectation.”
He added that while some areas of discussion recorded limited progress, disagreements over “two or three key points” ultimately prevented a deal with Washington. He did not confirm whether additional rounds of negotiations were scheduled.
Baqaei also highlighted the complexity of the agenda, noting that discussions reportedly included the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear issue, sanctions relief, war reparations, and broader regional security concerns.
In a separate post on the social media platform X, he stated: “In the past 24 hours, discussions were held on various dimensions of the main negotiation topics, including the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear issue, war reparations, lifting of sanctions, and the complete end to the war against Iran and in the region.”
He further emphasized that the success of any diplomatic process would depend on what he described as good faith from the opposing side and respect for Iran’s interests.
Baqaei also expressed appreciation to Pakistan for hosting the talks, acknowledging its role in facilitating the negotiations.
Separately, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported that the Iranian delegation has since departed Pakistan. The discussions, which included both direct and indirect formats mediated in Islamabad, lasted approximately 21 hours but concluded without an agreement……See More
