According to a report by Fox News, on Thursday April 16, 2026, a Retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, former special envoy to Ukraine, joined Fox News to discuss the escalating tensions.
He emphasized that the U.S. must be prepared for a next step if the blockade alone does not achieve its objectives.
“I’m already looking at the next step, where do we go next if the blockade has to be discontinued or continued and you add something on to it,” Kellogg stated. He suggested that this could involve U.S. Marines or the 82nd Airborne taking control of strategic Iranian islands like Kharg Island and Larak Island.
Kellogg issued a blunt warning to Tehran: “I would tell the Iranians look, if there’s a ship we put them through there and a mine goes off, you’re done. We’re done with this. We’re fed up with you. We’re finished”.
Despite the economic pressure, Kellogg expressed deep skepticism regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts, citing the fundamental nature of the Iranian leadership.
“My concern is we negotiating still with an autocratic theocratic government,” Kellogg warned. “When you look at people like their foreign minister Araghchi, these are hardcore revolutionary guards (IRGC)”
He noted that the generational shift within the Iranian military has not led to moderation. “It’s the old the younger crew that’s come on board. They’re still there.
