As reported by New York Post, Iran escalated its rhetoric against the ongoing U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, with a top military adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warning that American warships attempting to police the vital chokepoint would be sunk by Iranian missiles.
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser, told state broadcaster that U.S. ships “will be sunk by our first missiles” and have “created a great danger for the U.S. military.”
He added that Iranian forces could “definitely” destroy them, speaking in military uniform during the interview.
The threat comes as the U.S. enforces a blockade on vessels linked to Iranian ports, announced by President Donald Trump after peace talks in Islamabad collapsed.
U.S. Central Command has reported turning back multiple vessels, though two U.S.-sanctioned supertankers — including the VLCC RHN — have entered the Gulf in defiance, according to shipping data from LSEG and Kpler.
In a provocative twist, Iranian officials claimed a potential U.S. ground invasion of Iran would be “great” for the clerical regime.
They argued it would rally domestic support, unite the population, and allow Iranian forces to inflict heavy casualties on American troops in familiar terrain, drawing parallels to resistance tactics from the Iran-Iraq War.
The Strait of Hormuz handles about one-fifth of global oil and LNG trade. Disruptions have already pushed oil prices higher, with shipping operators largely avoiding the area amid mine risks and military posturing.
Analysts warn that any direct clash between U.S. Navy assets and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy could rapidly escalate the conflict.
