Trump Thought War With Iran Would Be Easy Like The Snatch And Grab Operation Of Maduro” Jennings

According to a video posted on Sky News, on Sunday July 12, 2026, defence analyst Peter Jennings said President Trump entered the conflict with Iran believing it would be a straightforward military campaign, a belief that has since proven far from accurate.

Speaking on Sky News, Jennings explained that this miscalculation has significantly shaped how the war has unfolded over the past several months.

Jennings explained that Trump’s early confidence was rooted in previous successful operations, including a rapid strike on Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility and the swift capture of a Venezuelan political leader.

He said these quick victories convinced Trump that air power alone would be sufficient to achieve his objectives in Iran, without requiring a larger, sustained military commitment involving ground forces or significant casualties.

In his words, Peter Jennings said, “I think Trump came into the start of this particular conflict thinking, wow, this military stuff’s quite easy, and air power is all that I’ll need to be able to change the regime in Iran.

“Now, he didn’t say that was his goal, but I think it was the important step to achieving the things that he said were his goals, which was like eliminating the nuclear program,” he said.

Jennings added that Trump has since realized that achieving his stated goals will require a far more aggressive and costly approach, something he appears reluctant to pursue given the political and human risks involved.
