Animal transfers across Kenyan reserves are permitted by law thanks to Kenya’s wildlife services. Animals may need to be transported for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to: drought, security performances, illness, and other similar scenarios. They used a wide variety of transport methods to move these animals. Transportation is primarily provided by truck and helicopter.
Black rhinos, a critically endangered species native to eastern and southern Africa, are often moved around as part of the critical conservation efforts to save the animals from extinction.
why Rhinos are transported upside-down?
Moving a rhino requires massive amounts of sedation, which can lead to hypoxemia, or low oxygen levels in the blood. By keeping the animal upside-down, the airway is relatively unobstructed. Positioning a rhino on its side leads to reduced oxygen being delivered to its body while under anesthesia.
The strategy was supported by a recent study published in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, which looked at 12 rhinos suspended both laterally and by their feet. Noticeable improvements in arterial oxygen pressure were observed when the animal was upside-down.
Animals are protected from the agony of muscle strains since they are not required to bear any weight on their legs. Their only sensation when the strap is wrapped around their ankle is pressure.…..See More
