“We Had No Better Options,” Saar Defends Iran War Amid Policy Split With Trump

According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has acknowledged differences with Donald Trump on Iran policy, while emphasizing continued strategic alignment between the two countries.

Speaking during a closed meeting with members of the American Friends of Likud, Saar said that despite differing assessments, both sides share broader long-term objectives. He stated that Iran has not resumed uranium enrichment following the June 2025 conflict, a position that contrasts with some earlier public claims.

Saar defended Israel’s role in the 12-day conflict, saying it was driven by concerns that Iran intended to move key elements of its nuclear program underground. “Before the war, we saw that they intended to move the program deep underground, where it would be protected from the American or Israeli air force, so we had no better options,” he said.

He stressed that removing Iran’s leadership was not an official objective of the war but acknowledged efforts to shape conditions that could lead to political change. “Israel will act if a clear opportunity emerges,” Saar said, adding that such developments ultimately depend on internal dynamics within Iran.

Addressing regional policy, Saar ruled out immediate steps toward annexing parts of the occupied West Bank, citing the need for coordination with Washington. “For implementing sovereignty, we will need to do it only in coordination with the United States of America,” he said.

Despite areas of disagreement, Saar maintained that Israel and the United States remain aligned on broader security priorities, particularly regarding regional stability and long-term strategic interests……See More
