According to a report by BBC News, on Saturday May 2, 2026, President Donald Trump expressed growing frustration on Friday with the pace of diplomatic negotiations with Tehran, even as he revealed that direct communication between the two nations has resumed.
Speaking to reporters following a briefing on the state of Operation Economic Fury, the President struck a somber and cautious tone regarding the prospects of a lasting peace treaty.
“We just had a conversation with Iran. Let’s see what happens,” President Trump said. “But, I would say that I am not happy.”
The President suggested that the primary obstacle to a breakthrough is the current state of the Iranian government.
According to Trump, the Iranian leadership has become increasingly disjointed and argumentative following the heavy toll the 60-day conflict has taken on their command structure.
He noted that a deal has been difficult to reach in part because the Iranian leadership was very confused after a number of its top military officials were killed in the war.
