According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, May 29, 2026, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has declared that any attempt to overthrow the country’s democratic government through a coup would fail, stressing that Nigerians and the Armed Forces remain firmly committed to protecting constitutional rule.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Musa reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to Nigeria’s democratic system, insisting that the era of military rule is not a preferable option for the country.
He said the Armed Forces remain focused on safeguarding democratic governance and ensuring political stability, adding that any individual or group contemplating a coup would face strong resistance from both the military establishment and the Nigerian public.
According to him, democracy, despite its challenges, remains the best governance system for Nigeria.
He stated, “Democracy is still the better option for us. We are fully committed to ensuring that it is protected and sustained.”
The Defence Minister also reflected on a past coup investigation in which he played a significant role, noting that he was part of the team of senior military officers who uncovered and exposed an alleged plot to overthrow the government.
He described the experience as sobering, saying it revealed the seriousness of the threat and the importance of vigilance within the Armed Forces.
He stated, “I just looked at the people that were involved in that, I shook my head.”
Musa explained that the discovery of the alleged plot reinforced the need for continuous intelligence gathering and strict internal monitoring within the military to prevent any attempt to destabilize the country.
He further assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain alert and committed to defending the nation’s democratic institutions against any internal or external threats.
“The military remains professional, and we are fully aware of our constitutional responsibilities,” he said, emphasizing that discipline and loyalty to civilian authority remain core principles guiding the Armed Forces.
Musa also urged citizens to remain confident in the country’s security architecture, noting that significant efforts are ongoing to strengthen intelligence operations and inter-agency collaboration.
He stressed that maintaining national stability requires cooperation between the military, other security agencies, and the civilian population…..See More
