“They Would Not Be Allowed To Set The Country On Fire” -AGF Warns Political Actors Ahead Of 2027

According to a report by Punch on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has issued a strong warning to political actors, saying the federal government will not tolerate actions capable of destabilising Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fagbemi made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja during a conference organised by the National Association of Judiciary Correspondents (NAJUC), where he addressed growing political tensions, allegations of persecution, and concerns over national stability.

According to him, the government will not be intimidated by blackmail or political pressure from individuals he described as “political desperados.” He warned that any attempt to incite violence or spread hate speech would be met with strict legal consequences.

“Those fanning the embers of hatred must be stopped,” Fagbemi said. “Those who have lost their sense of patriotism should know that they would not be allowed to set the country on fire.”

He stressed that security and law enforcement agencies would continue to perform their constitutional duties without interference, insisting that no individual is above the law.

“Let me state with respect that relevant government agencies will not be stopped from doing their work if anyone runs foul of the law,” he added. “The government will not succumb to blackmail no matter whose ox is gored.”

The AGF also urged political actors to operate within the boundaries of the law as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. He cautioned that divisive rhetoric and unconstitutional behaviour would not be tolerated.
