PDP Crisis: Damagun, Others Commence Contempt Proceedings Against Anyanwu Amupitan

‎According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, on Wednesday April 22, 2026, PDP chairman Damagun and others has started contempt proceedings against Senator Samuel Anyanwu and INEC chairman Professor Joash Amupitan over alleged disobedience of court order.

‎The case is linked to a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment delivered on January 12, 2026, the applicants filed a Form 48 notice warning of consequences for disobeying court order, they claim Anyanwu ignored a ruling that dismissed his challenge to his expulsion from the PDP.

‎The notice warned that Anyanwu and others must obey the court order or face contempt, it stated that continued disobedience could lead to imprisonment under contempt of court rules, the applicants said the court had already upheld the expulsion of Anyanwu from the PDP.

‎The dispute is part of a wider crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, a faction led by Tanimu Turaki emerged from the Ibadan convention held in November 2025, that group claims the court has validated its leadership and supported the expulsion of Anyanwu, however, INEC has also been linked to recognition of a rival PDP faction in earlier decisions.

‎Court of Appeal rulings have complicated the leadership tussle by nullifying some party structures, the same court also upheld the expulsion of Anyanwu and other party officials, the Supreme Court is expected to hear appeals from the PDP factions on the matter.

‎The Turaki-led group has asked INEC to remove Anyanwu from its records as PDP secretary, they argue that continuing recognition of him contradicts the court judgment on his expulsion, their lawyers warned that failure to comply could lead to further legal action including contempt, INEC has been urged to act in line with court rulings pending final appeal decisions……See More
