Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights activist and legal practitioner has taken to his official X handle to react after Senate leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele reopened conversation on a single term of six years for the office of the president and governors.
According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle on Tuesday July 21st, 2026 he pointed out that the discussions should be ended as the proposal cannot work.
Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, had argued that in order to ensure elected presidents and governors concentrate on governance rather than being preoccupied with re-elections, a single term should be considered.
His statements were a contribution to the demand for a single term of six years for elected executive offices which included the office of the president and state governors.
However, Chidi Odinkalu, widely admired for his candid opinions, pointed out that the plans cannot work. He used the words of national icon, Chief Obafemi Awolowo to drive down his points.
Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in his famous quote, had stated that elongation of tenure was borne out of quest for naked power and not service to the people.
Chidi Odinkalu maintained that the proposal had drawbacks and counter arguments, however, it must be ended as a single term of six years might not be favourable to the people……See More
