Prof. Anthony Kila, Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development, has reacted to the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, describing them as a consequence of past experiences.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV on Monday, July 20, 2026, Kila challenged the notion of “One Africa” by pointing to the recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He stated that it appears other African Union (AU) leaders and African heads of state are reluctant to call South Africa to order.
He went on to explain what he believes is the root cause of the problem. He likened it to the era of racial segregation between whites and Blacks in South Africa, during which Black South Africans were subjected to systemic discrimination. According to Kila, that history has, in some cases, turned victims into bullies.
