Mahdi Shehu has claimed that former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, may return to Nigeria to seek the recovery of assets confiscated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Speaking during an interview on the PAP Show, Shehu compared Diezani’s case with that of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami. He said the value of cash and properties seized from Diezani in Nigeria was far greater, running into trillions of naira, yet the country had continued without any major consequences.
Shehu said he had heard from what he described as “the vineyard” that Diezani was planning to return to Nigeria to reclaim the assets that had been confiscated and sold. According to him, this was because she had been vindicated by a court in London.
He further suggested that if Diezani eventually returned, Nigerians should not be surprised if she was honoured by the government or even contested for elective office, such as governor or senator, arguing that such developments were possible in the country’s political system.
Shehu also argued that if Diezani succeeded in recovering her confiscated assets, it would raise questions about previous court-ordered asset seizures. He said such an outcome could mean the government would have to apologise to people whose properties were taken under similar court orders.
Diezani has faced corruption investigations in Nigeria for years, while several of her assets have been confiscated through court-approved forfeiture proceedings.
