Usman Bugaje, the Islamic scholar and civil society leader, criticized FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, alleging the minister behaves above the law and faces little institutional resistance, while recalling one Navy officer who publicly challenged his actions during governance.
According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of SYMFONI on Sunday, July 19, 2026, while discussing governance and accountability, Bugaje argued that democratic institutions should uphold the rule of law without fear or favoritism always.
He expressed concern that public officials must remain accountable regardless of office, saying unchecked authority weakens confidence in governance and discourages citizens from expecting equal treatment under existing laws and constitutional principles across the country every single day.
During the interview, he stated, “take the FCT Minister, for example. He seems to be above the law and is doing almost anything he really wants. But for that Navy officer, I hope he is still in the service, who really challenged him.”
Bugaje added that the Navy officer stood out because few others openly challenged the minister, suggesting stronger institutional oversight encourages accountability and protects democratic values through lawful engagement instead of silence or intimidation in public life for everyone.
