A Nigerian returnee from South Africa has shared a painful personal experience, revealing that she was forced to share her husband with a South African woman because he married her in a bid to secure legal residency and citizenship documents.
The woman spoke during an interview with an Arise News correspondent, following the arrival of Nigerian returnees from South Africa amid growing concerns over xenophobic violence and the safety of foreign nationals living in the country.
According to the returnee, her husband’s decision to marry a South African was driven by immigration challenges and the desire to obtain legal status in South Africa.
She said: “I was sharing my husband with a South African woman whom he married for citizenship.”
She noted that while the arrangement was intended to address immigration issues, it placed a significant emotional burden on her and affected their family life.
According to her, the situation became even more painful when he died, alleging that his South African wife refused to release his body for transportation back to Nigeria.
She claimed that the disagreement complicated efforts to give him a burial in his homeland and added to the grief her family was already experiencing.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the returnee described it as one of the most difficult periods of her life, saying she never imagined that issues surrounding immigration documents would eventually lead to such family complications.
