Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, has disclosed that security forces recently apprehended several individuals accused of providing logistical and financial support to terrorist groups. According to him, those arrested were purchasing food supplies and fuel, transporting them on motorcycles, and delivering them to terrorists operating in different locations. He also stated that investigations revealed some of the suspects were transferring money through bank accounts to help finance the activities of the criminal groups.
Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, General Musa explained that these arrests highlight the importance of cutting off the support systems that allow terrorists to continue operating. He noted that armed groups depend heavily on outside assistance for food, fuel, transportation, and funding, adding that disrupting those supply channels is an important part of weakening their operations. He stressed that without such backing, terrorist groups would find it much more difficult to sustain their activities.
The Defence Minister also urged state governments to become more actively involved in addressing the country’s security challenges. He said the responsibility for tackling insecurity should not be placed solely on the federal government, emphasizing that state administrations have a vital role to play in protecting their communities and supporting security efforts.
General Musa further called on governors to strengthen local government councils by giving them the authority and resources needed to function effectively. He argued that well-equipped local governments are better positioned to understand the security situation in their communities and can respond more quickly to emerging threats.
According to him, effective local governance can help identify suspicious movements, gather useful information, and disrupt criminal networks before they become deeply established. He added that local authorities are also in a stronger position to engage young people through community-based initiatives, reducing the risk of recruitment by criminal and terrorist groups.
