During an interview on Trust TV on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Ikenna Azomchine, a former ally of Peter Obi, spoke about his past support for the former Labour Party presidential candidate and explained why his views later changed.
Azomchine, who described himself as the “Obidient General,” reflected on his involvement with the Obidient movement and his years of engagement with Nigeria from the diaspora. He said his support for Obi was based on a desire to see positive change in the country but added that he eventually became uncomfortable with what he perceived as the former Anambra State governor’s approach to engaging Nigerians abroad and the international community.
According to him, “I, Obedient General Ikenna Azomchine; Who am I? That’s the first question you ask me. I’m a man that is very rugged. First of all, you might not know that part of me. I’m a man that is very practical. I like to try things. I tried Peter Obi. If I may say, you don’t know this background. I felt Peter Obi was traveling around Europe and America, going to city halls, associating with Nigerians in the diaspora, and trying to create that notion that the country is badly run and I was a diasporan.”
He argued that members of the Nigerian diaspora have historically contributed to national development by connecting investors with opportunities in the country and supporting initiatives aimed at improving Nigeria’s image abroad. He stated that many of these efforts were carried out voluntarily and without expectations of financial reward.
Azomchine maintained that Nigeria requires a more focused approach to governance and development. According to him, political leaders and stakeholders should concentrate on creating an environment that attracts investment and promotes national progress while strengthening confidence in the country’s future.
