Oluwatomisin Adekunle, the sister of a teenage boy currently being held in custody, has appealed for urgent assistance to secure the release of her 14-year-old brother, Adekunle, alleging that he has endured years of detention despite maintaining his innocence.
Speaking in an interview with Punch Newspapers, on Saturday, 6 June, 2026, Oluwatomisin recounted how her family eventually discovered the whereabouts of the teenager after initially losing contact with him. She claimed that when they finally received information about him, they learned he had been detained at the Kirikiri correctional facility in Lagos.
The appeal forms part of a growing campaign by the family to draw attention to the boy’s case and seek intervention from relevant authorities, human rights organisations and legal aid groups.
Recounting the moment the family learned about his detention, Oluwatomisin said, “On December 27, 2022, someone called to inform me that my brother was in prison at Kirikiri. They didn’t register his name as Micheal Adekunle but Michael Adeniyi and he said he was battered and tortured but he kept saying he was innocent.”
According to her, the discrepancy in the teenager’s name complicated efforts by the family to trace him and understand the circumstances surrounding his detention. She further alleged that the boy was subjected to physical abuse while in custody, a claim she said has deepened the family’s concerns about his welfare.
Oluwatomisin maintained that her brother has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly insisted on his innocence. She urged authorities to review his case and investigate the allegations surrounding his treatment while in detention.
