The North Cannot Trust Obi’s Pledge To Do Only One Tenure, He Has Not Condemned IPOB And Kanu -Sani

According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Anthony Sani, former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), on Wednesday made comments regarding Nigeria’s 2027 general election and the political expectations of different regions ahead of the contest, particularly focusing on northern political strategy and zoning considerations.

Speaking in an interview, Sani outlined what he described as the anticipated voting behaviour of the northern region in relation to President Bola Tinubu’s second term ambition and how that aligns with longer-term political calculations ahead of 2031.

He stated that the northern region is likely to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, such backing would be influenced by strategic political interests, with the North considering the broader implications of its electoral choices within Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement.

Sani further explained that support for Tinubu’s re-election bid would not only be about the 2027 race itself but also about positioning the North for a return to the presidency in 2031.

He suggested that political alignment with Tinubu’s second term could enhance the region’s prospects in future electoral cycles, particularly under the prevailing zoning expectations in national politics.

He also commented on the South-East political direction, stating that the region is expected to support the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi.

He attributed this anticipated support to the influence of zoning politics, which continues to shape political alliances and voting decisions across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

According to Sani, however, the northern region would not be inclined to support Peter Obi’s presidential ambition.

He explained that there is a perception within the North that Obi may not be committed to serving only a single term if elected, which he said affects the level of trust the region has in his candidacy.

He also linked this skepticism to broader concerns about national unity and stability within the political system.

He added: “As to Peter Obi, the North cannot trust Peter Obi’s pledge to do only one tenure. What is more, the North believes a President Peter Obi will play Gorbachev who presides over the collapse of Soviet Union, since he has not condemned IPOB and Nnamdi Kanu……See More
