‘Only VP Since 1999 Not To Run For President After Leaving Office’ -Ishaq Samaila On Namadi Sambo

Ishaq Samaila, Media Aide to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, said Namadi Sambo stands out for not seeking higher office after leaving power.

Samaila posted on his X handle on Tuesday. Samaila sees Sambo’s exit as unusual in Nigerian politics, where former VPs often stay active, run for president, or create political noise to stay relevant. He’s saying it’s worth analysing as a case of restraint.

Samaila stated that Sambo’s exit “needs to be studied”. He noted that after Jonathan’s defeat, Sambo “simply retired quietly to his private life” with “no noise, no endless political drama, and no desperate hunger for power”.

Samaila meant Sambo didn’t try to manipulate events or force a comeback. He stepped aside and let political developments play out without him.

According to Samaila, Sambo walked away peacefully and allowed history to take its course, unlike other vice presidents who maintain a strong appetite for ambition after leaving office. “Till today, since 1999, Namadi Sambo remains the only vice president who has never attempted to become president after leaving office.
